Fruit Juices

Over the past few years, prices for fruits used in juices have dropped significantly. Orange prices are often so low that they do not even cover production costs for small- and medium-sized producers.

Orange juice production in particular is concentrated in the hands of a few powerful multinational corporations that control the market. This hampers small farmers’ ability to compete and forces many of them out of business. As a result, most of the fruit used in juices are grown on plantations that often rely on contracted temporary workers with few rights, low wages and poor conditions.

What Fairtrade means for fruit juice producers

Fairtrade certified fruit juices help small farmers survive on the world market by providing more stable prices. Fairtrade standards for plantations ensure minimum wages for workers and decent living and working conditions. Producers and workers groups also receive a Fairtrade Premium above the selling price to invest in social and business projects in their communities.
